Seahawks Handle Hofstra In CAA Tourney Opener

WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia – Top-seeded UNCW won the first four singles matches off the court to shut out No. 9 Hofstra, 4-0, in the first of four quarterfinal matches in the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Tennis Championship early Friday at William & Mary's McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.

The Seahawks, playing indoors due to inclement weather in the Williamsburg area, raised their record to 15-7 overall and have not lost in four conference outings this spring The Pride dropped to 7-12 after splitting a pair of matches in the CAA Championship.

The two teams played singles first and the Seahawks dominated from the first toss for their fifth shutout of the year. UNCW moved to 7-0 lifetime against the Pride.

Freshman Alex de Gabriele got things going for the Seahawks by zipping past Hofstra's Hideki Matsuoka, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 6 singles. Sophomore Trey Mallory's 6-4, 6-2, decision against HU's Vincent Turina then raised the score to 2-0.

After sophomore Harold Huens followed with a 6-3, 6-1, thumping of Hofstra's Bo Cautaerts at No. 2 singles for a 3-0 advantage, junior Reece Falck clinched the match for the first time this season by outlasting Ostap Kovalenko, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, at the top of the lineup, sending the Seahawks to the semifinals for the 14th straight year.

The Seahawks have now won seven consecutive matches and 15 of their last 16 pairings in the conference tournament since 2017. UNCW stands 18-3 as the top seed in the event.

UNCW will next face No. 4 Drexel, a quarterfinal winner over No. 5 North Carolina A&T, in Saturday's semifinals scheduled for noon.
