Seahawks One Match Away From Ninth Tennis Title

WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia – Top-seeded UNCW stormed back from an early deficit to cruise past No. 4 Drexel, 4-1, in the semifinals of the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Tennis Championship on Saturday at William & Mary's Millie West Courts at the Mackesy Tennis Center.

No. 1 UNCW, 16-7, will face No. 3 Elon, 15-8, in the CAA Championship match on Sunday at 2 p.m. Drexel had a five-match winning streak snapped and ended the season at 10-11.

The Dragons won the deciding match at No. 2 doubles to win the early point on Saturday, but the two-time defending champion Seahawks responded by sweeping the first four singles matches off the court to advance to the championship match for the sixth consecutive year.

No. 6 player Trey Mallory blitzed Drexel's Pierre Humayou, 6-0, 6-2, to even the score at 1-all and graduate student Davide Innocenti of UNCW crushed Drexel's Hugo Brungs, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5 singles to give the Seahawks the lead for good, 2-1.

Junior Reece Falck, playing at the top of the lineup, then extended the score to 3-1 with a 6-1, 6-4, verdict over Alan Jesudason, setting up the clincher by sophomore Bekhzod Rasamatov at No. 4 singles. The Tushkent, Uzbekistan, native trimmed Drexel's Matvey Radionov, 6-3, 7-5, for his second clincher of the season.

The Seahawks have won eight consecutive matches and 16 of their last 17 pairings in the conference tournament since 2017. UNCW stands 19-3 as the top seed in the event.

UNCW and Elon have played for the CAA crown twice in the last three years, splitting the matches. The Phoenix won, 4-3, in 2019 for their first CAA title and the Seahawks earned a 4-2 victory last season for their second straight conference championship and eighth since 2009.
