Kane Pitches UNCW To Twinbill Split At Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Freshman reliever Connor Kane delivered another impressive relief performance, allowing just two hits and a run in five innings out of the bullpen as UNCW gained a split of a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader at Hofstra with a 6-3 win in game two at University Field.

The Seahawks saw their record moved to 25-16 overall and 14-5 in the conference. The Pride, meanwhile, pushed their record to 20-23 and 10-13 in the league. Hofstra won in the opener, 9-8, after rallying from a seven-run deficit over the final four innings.

Kane (3-1) entered the game in the bottom of the fifth in relief of starter Zane Taylor and went more than three innings for the fourth time this season. He walked one and struck out two in gaining the win.

Brock Wills, who had six hits on the twinbill, had three hits, including a pair of doubles, at the top of the order. Tanner Thach, John Newton, Jac Croom and Alec DeMartino had two hits apiece. Croom knocked in two runs while Thach scored twice.

Mark Faello (4-6) took the loss for the Pride, allowing three runs in four innings of work.

Santino Rosso, who had the game-winning two-run double in the opener, collected two hits in the nightcap.

The series resumes and concludes on Sunday with a noon start.

How it happened (Game 2): UNCW turned a 2-1 deficit in the fifth inning of game two into a 4-2 lead with a three-run frame. Willis began the outburst with an infield single and Dillon Lifrieri reached safely on a fielder's choice. Thach followed with a single to left sending Lifrieri to third and with runners on the corners and two out, Newton tied the game with an infield single to the right side. Croom singled to center to push across the go-ahead run and the final run came across on a dropped fly ball one batter later.

Notes: Thach set a UNCW freshman record with 51 runs batted in this season with his RBI in the second game … In the opener, Taber Mongero set a program record with 11 assists … Newton and DeMartino hit their ninth and seventh homers, respectively, in the opener … The teams combined for 11 extra-base hits in game one … The nightcap win snapped a four-game losing skid for the Seahawks at University Field.
