Campbell Turns Back UNCW on Wednesday

BUIES CREEK, North Carolina – The UNCW softball team dropped a doubleheader to close out non-conference play at Campbell at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium on Wednesday.

The Camels (35-13) edged the Seahawks (18-24) 4-3 in the first game before completing the two-game sweep with a 4-2 result in the nightcap.

UNCW next hosts Drexel on Saturday (DH- 1 p.m.) and Sunday (12 p.m.) for a three-game set at Boseman Field. It marks the final home series of the season for the Seahawks, who will honor six seniors throughout the weekend.

GAME 1 | Campbell 4, UNCW 3

Back-to-back seventh-inning doubles by Campbell's Charlie Montgomery and Claudia Ware pushed the Camels past the Seahawks, who evened the game with two runs in the top half of the inning.

The Seahawks, trailing 3-1 entering the final inning, had the first two batters reach base courtesy of a Mary Sobataka full-count walk and Skylar Stockton hit by pitch.

Fifth-year Logan Bjorson bunted them into scoring position and Tayler Vitola drove in Sobataka with an infield single one batter later. UNCW then evened the game, 3-all, with an Arial Pearce sac-bunt that scored Stockton, who recorded two hits and scored twice in the contest.

Montgomery led off the bottom of the seventh with a double and then scored the game-winning run on a Ware two-bagger to center field.

Campbell's Isabella Smith (23-8) earned the win with one inning in relief of Camels starter Kayla Howald, who scattered four hits and surrendered three runs in 6.0+ innings.

UNCW's Janel Gamache and Carrigan Ewers (1-5) each tossed three innings and allowed seven hits with one earned run.

GAME 2 | Campbell 4, UNCW 2

The Camels scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the third to back a complete game effort from Smith (24-8) in the second game.

The Seahawks committed three errors in the decisive inning in which Campbell sent seven batters to the plate.

UNCW sliced the deficit in half in the top of the fifth on a Campbell fielding miscue on an Arial Pearce groundball that scored Vitola, who singled for the second time in the game to start the inning. Pearce advanced to third and crossed home on two wild pitches two batters later.

Sophomore right-handers Kara Hammock (9-8) and Emily Winstead each tossed three innings and combined for six strikeouts for UNCW.
