Seahawks Rip Cougars In Regular Season Finale

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Sophomore Trey Mallory clinched the match for the second time this season to send UNCW past rival Charleston, 4-1, in the Colonial Athletic Association men's tennis regular season finale for both teams on Sunday at the UNCW Courts.
 
The Seahawks extended their record to 14-7 overall and 2-0 in the CAA, finishing a sterling 11-1 at home this spring.
 
The Cougars had their record evened at 10-10 and dropped to 0-2 in the CAA after losing to Elon and UNCW.
 
UNCW fell behind early, 1-0, after dropping the doubles point, but countered with its superior depth in singles action.
 
Freshman Alex de Gabriele got things rolling in singles play with a quick 6-1, 6-0, verdict over Charleston's Jordyn Larke at the No. 6 position and junior Gabe Hurtado put the Seahawks ahead for good with a 6-1, 6-1, rout of Robby Krick at No. 3 singles.
 
After freshman Harry Huens raised the score to 3-1 with a 6-0, 6-1, victory against Zac Larke at No. 2 singles, Mallory cruised past Charleston's Johnny Wang, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 5 singles for the match clincher.
 
The Seahawks next defend their title in the 2023 Colonial Athletic Association Men's Tennis Championships at William & Mary's Mackesy Tennis Center at the Millie West Courts in Williamsburg, Va.
