Seahawks Upset Cougars In CAA Tourney

WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia – Graduate student Zoe Huffman outlasted senior Slade Coetzee in three sets at No. 1 singles to lift No. 6 UNCW to a 4-3 upset over No. 3 Charleston in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Colonial Athletic Association Women's Tennis Championships late Friday at William & Mary's Mackesy Tennis Center at the Millie West Courts.
 
The Seahawks, who defeated Hofstra in Thursday's first round, improved to 12-8 and avenged a home loss to the Cougars last Saturday. UNCW will now face No. 7 Drexel in the semifinals on Saturday at noon.
 
Charleston finished the season at 16-6 and had its four-match winning streak stopped with Friday's stinging defeat.
 
In Friday's thriller, the match came down to the veterans, Huffman and Coetzee, battling it out with the score knotted at 3-all. Huffman secured the first set, 6-4, before Coetzee forced a third set by holding on in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (5). Huffman then grabbed control in the decisive set, bolting ahead 4-0 and never looking back in a convincing 6-0 decision.
 
Seahawk freshman Eda Arli minutes earlier rallied past Halli Trinkle, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 2 singles to even the score at 3-all to set the stage for Huffman's clincher.
 
Another freshman, Gabbie Glickstein picked up UNCW's third singles win, cruising past Charleston's Peyton Brotzman, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 6 singles.
 
UNCW collected the important early point by winning the top two doubles positions. The No. 1 tandem of Eda Arli and Lauren Gish cruised past Charleston's Slade Coetzee and Halli Trinkle, 6-2, and the No. 2 team of Zoe Huffman and Anna Daniels trimmed Ella Faessler and Nicole Stephens, 6-4.
