Seahawks Dominate Pride In CAA Tourney Opener

WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia – Graduate student Lauren Gish won her team-best 14th match of the season as No. 6 UNCW blistered No. 11 Hofstra, 4-0, in the first round of the 2023 Colonial Athletic Association Women's Tennis Championships late Thursday at William & Mary's Mackesy Tennis Center at the Millie West Courts.
 
The Seahawks now face No. 3 Charleston in one of four quarterfinal matches set for Friday at 6 p.m. Charleston handed UNCW a 6-1 defeat in the regular season finale last Saturday at the UNCW courts.
 
UNCW, which topped the Pride, 5-2, back on March 24 in Oceanside, N.Y., raised its record to 11-8 overall after winning for the fifth time in the last seven outings. Hofstra ended the season at 2-15.
 
In Thursday's match, the Seahawks defeated the Pride for the fourth time in CAA Tournament play by easily winning the doubles point and sweeping the first three singles matches off the court for the decisive victory.
 
UNCW captured the doubles point for the 11th time in 19 matches with a pair of 6-0 shutouts at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Graduate student Zoe Huffman and senior Anna Daniels cruised past Hofstra's Ananyaa Bhargava and Mary Madigan for the clincher at the No. 2 position.
 
The Seahawks kept up the pressure in singles with three consecutive wins at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5.  Sophomore Stela Joksimovic delivered her first clincher of the season with a 7-5, 6-3, triumph over Hofstra's Kaitlyn Ferguson.
