Stony Brook Rallies Past UNCW, 3-2

STONY BROOK, New York – Stony Brook's Corinne Badger hit a walk-off two-run home run to spoil UNCW's would-be sweep in a 3-2 decision to close out the Colonial Athletic Association softball series on Sunday afternoon at the University Field.

The Seawolves (12-16, 3-8 CAA) avoided the three-game sweep after the Seahawks (14-18, 8-4 CAA) won games on Friday and Saturday.

SBU right-hander Ashton Melaas (4-8) limited UNCW to two hits and one run with a pair of strikeouts in two relief innings.

Sophomore righty Kara Hammock (7-5) took the loss in relief of fellow second-year Emily Winstead, who scattered six hits while holding the Seawolves to one run. Winstead also notched a season-high eight strikeouts in the six-inning effort.

Winstead and SBU starter Mia Hayes matched one another through five innings with both allowing one run.

UNCW sophomore Elizabeth Winstead, who pushed her hitting streak to 10 games, helped her sister in the top of the seventh with a two-out single up the middle to score freshman right fielder Carson Fleming, making her first career start, and break the deadlock.

Badger, the third batter of the seventh's bottom frame, launched the game-winner over the center field wall that also plated junior Alicia Orosco, who reached on an error earlier in the inning.

The Seahawks welcome No. 13 Duke to Boseman Field on Wednesday, Mar. 5, with a doubleheader set for 2 p.m.
