Seahawks Hold Off Runnin' Bulldogs In Tennis

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW men's tennis team kept its home record unblemished following a hard-earned 4-2 victory over Big South Conference regular season champion Gardner-Webb on Thursday at the UNCW courts.

The Seahawks improved to 13-6 overall and remained perfect with a 10-0 record on their home courts. Coach Mait DuBois and his club have won nine out of their last 10 matches heading into the regular season's final three matches.

GWU now stands 15-6 after having its four-match winning streak snapped. Thursday's result was the regular season finale for the Runnin' Bulldogs, who are 6-4 on the road this spring.

The Seahawks won the critical doubles point to build the early momentum and then tacked on three singles victories to nail down the narrow win.

In doubles, the No. 2 Seahawk team of junior Reece Falck and freshman Alex de Gabriele won a close match to give the Seahawks a 1-0 edge. Falck and de Gabriele edged GWU's Victor Putter and Numa Lemirux-Monette, 7-6 (3).

GWU claimed the first match off the court in singles to square the score at 1-all, but UNCW's Gabe Hurtado (No. 3) and Harold Huens (No. 2) posted three-set wins to give the Seahawks a 3-1 advantage. Hurtado and Huens share the team lead with 11 singles victories this spring.

The Runnin' Bulldogs bounced back with a three-set victory at No. 6 singles, but graduate student Davide Innocenti clinched the match for the Seahawks with a 6-2, 7-6, decision against GWU's Kim Neithammar. Innocenti's win snapped a school-record 18-match winning streak for Neithammar, a sophomore from Harrenburg, Germany.

The Seahawks return to the UNCW courts on Sunday, Apr. 16, for a noon match vs. South Alabama.
