Gamache Leads UNCW Over Stony Brook

STONY Brook, New York – UNCW's Janel Gamache doubled twice at the plate and tossed a complete game in the circle to lead the Seahawks to a 5-2 Colonial Athletic Association softball win over Stony Brook on a rainy Saturday afternoon at the University Field.

The Seahawks (14-17, 8-3 CAA) hiked their win streak to five games with the series-clinching victory. The Seawolves (11-16, 2-8 CAA) have dropped six of their last nine contests.

Gamache (4-4) recorded her second complete game of the season and lowered her ERA to 1.51. The 5-11 right-hander limited SBU to two runs, one earned, and scattered six hits over 79 pitches.

The two-way star drove in her team-leading 18th and 19th runs courtesy of two separate doubles. It marked Gamache's sixth multi-RBI performance of 2023.

The Seawolves' Ashton Melaas (3-8) took the loss for the second time this weekend. The senior righty was tagged for five unearned runs in 4.2 innings.

UNCW cashed in an SBU miscue in the fifth inning for four unearned runs. After Logan Bjorson doubled, Skylar Stockton reached on a Melaas error that allowed Bjorson to score. Sophomore Arial Pearce was hit two batters later to put runners on the corner with two outs.

Second baseman Tayler Vitola then drove in Stockton with her second hit of the day to make it 3-1. A passed ball allowed Pearce to cross home and bring up Gamache, who laced her second double of the day to right-center that plated Vitola.

Both teams scored unearned runs in the first inning with Gamache giving UNCW a brief 1-0 advantage on a two-out double.

The Seahawks and Seawolves conclude the series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
