Aggies Edge Baseball To Even Series

WILMINGTON, N.C. – North Carolina A&T pitchers Xavier Meachem and Jake DeLisi combined to allow three runs on just four hits as the Aggies evened the Colonial Athletic Association series at UNCW on Saturday with a 4-3 win at Brooks Field.

The Aggies moved back to .500 overall on the season at 13-13 and improved to 6-5 in the league. The Seahawks, meanwhile, dropped to 17-10 and 8-3 in the CAA.

Meachem (1-0), who was making his first start of the season, limited the Seahawks to two runs on a pair of hits, walked four and struck out five in a season-high five innings of work. DeLisi earned the save with four innings of two-hit relief.

Anthony Hennings had a pair of RBI doubles to lead the Aggies, who only managed five hits of their own.

John Newton had two of UNCW's four hits on the night.

Mason Murdock (0-1) suffered the loss while tying his career-long outing with 4.1 innings. He allowed two hits and three runs, two earned.

The series concludes on Sunday with a 1 p.m. start.

How it happened: NC A&T plated the first run of the game in the second inning. Cameran Brantly, who scored twice, was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and scored one batter later on a double inside the third base bag. The Aggies pushed it to 3-0 with two runs in the fifth. A leadoff single go the Aggies going and a fielding error on a sacrifice bunt the next batter put runners on first and second. Another sac bunt advanced both and Camden Jackson followed with a single through a drawn-in infield that plated both runners.

Home Runs: none, the wind was blowing in at 35 mph.

Notes: UNCW is 10-8 at home this season … Tonight was the first one-run game of the season … NC A&T was 0-for-9 with two outs … Dillon Lifrieri had UNCW's lone hit with a runner in scoring position … UNCW reliever Ethan Chenault has allowed just three of 20 inherited runners score … The game was played in 2:32.
