Aggies, Gamecocks Turn Back Seahawks

COLUMBIA, South Carolina – The UNCW softball team dropped a pair of games to North Carolina A&T and South Carolina to close out the Gamecock Invitational at Carolina Softball Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Seahawks (5-13) were edged 4-3 by the Aggies (3-14) before the Gamecocks (19-2) claimed an 8-0 decision in six innings in the weekend finale.

UNCW is back at home next weekend to open Colonial Athletic Association play with a three-game set vs. Towson from Mar. 11-12 on FloSoftball.

GAME 1 | N.C. A&T 4, UNCW 3

The Aggies plated three unearned runs in the top of the fourth and added an insurance score in the sixth to pick up the win.

N.C. A&T's Megan Ellis (1-0) earned her first win of 2023 with a three-hit, three-run, one earned, complete game effort.

Seahawks right-hander Janel Gamache (1-3) struck out a career-high seven batters and allowed four runs, one earned, in 5.0+ innings of work.

UNCW got on the board in the bottom of the third when Morgan Britt crossed home on a failed pickoff attempt by the Aggies.

After the Aggies scored the contest's next four runs, the Seahawks got two back in the bottom of the sixth on a Tayler Vitola bunt single that scored Skylar Stockton and a Mary Sobataka groundout that plated Vitola.

GAME 2 | South Carolina 8, UNCW 0 (6 innings)

The Gamecocks scored seven runs in the final two innings to sprint past the Seahawks.

USC reliever Karsen Ochs (5-1) picked up the win in two scoreless innings while Donnie Gobourne collected her fourth save of the season.

UNCW's Kara Hammock (3-3) was tagged with the loss in which the right-hander allowed three runs in five innings to go with four strikeouts and a walk.

The Gamecocks struck early with a run in the bottom of the first when Jordan Fabien scored on a Riley Blampied sac-fly in foul territory.

The teams traded scoreless frames for the next three innings until USC added two runs in the fifth and broke it open with a five-run sixth inning to seal the deal.
