Softball Earns Twinbill Sweep in CAA Opener

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Graduate two-way player Janel Gamache made a splash at the plate and in the circle as UNCW totaled 18 runs and 22 hits to sweep the Colonial Athletic Association twinbill opener vs. Towson on Saturday afternoon at Boseman Field.

The Seahawks (7-13, 2-0 CAA) downed the Tigers (8-7, 0-2 CAA) 9-3 in the first conference game then scored at least one run in the first four innings to secure a 9-2 triumph to cap the doubleheader.

Gamache launched a home run in each game, both clanking off the roof of the outdoor hitting facility in left field and recorded four hits on Sunday. In the circle, the 5-11 two-way star fired five innings of one-run ball in the second game to earn the win.

With a series win assured, UNCW goes for its first CAA sweep of 2023 on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. The start time was moved up to accommodate for expected rainfall in the afternoon.

GAME 1 | UNCW 9, Towson 3

A four-run fourth inning highlighted by a two-RBI single off the bat of third baseman Logan Bjorson helped the Seahawks erase an early 3-1 hole.

Sophomore Kara Hammock (3-3) tossed her 10th career complete game, striking out nine while allowing three hits. The 6-2 right-hander recorded six strikeouts through the first three innings.

Towson's Maddie Gardner (4-3) was tagged for nine runs, eight earned, and 12 hits in 5.2 innings of work.

Second baseman Tayler Vitola produced a game-high three hits while Gamache and Bjorson each added a pair of knocks.

The Seahawks, trailing 3-1, sent nine batters to the plate, beginning with a Gamache full-count walk, in the bottom of the frame. With Gamache on and one out, Jada Santiago and Morgan Britt singled to load the bases for Bjorson, who shot the first pitch she saw to left center to bring home Carson Fleming, who pinch-ran for Santiago, and Gamache.

After Bjorson and Britt executed a double steal, Skylar Stockton's sac-fly plated Britt and Vitola followed with a single to drive in Bjorson and make it 5-3 in favor of UNCW.

Gamache added a towering home run in the fifth and the Seahawks tacked on three runs in the sixth to open CAA play with a victory.

GAME 2 | UNCW 9, Towson 2

UNCW scored six runs in the second and third innings to take a commanding 7-1 lead and coast to victory.

Gamache (2-3) led set the tone early on the rubber and added a monstrous solo shot in to kick-start a three-run third to ice the win early.

The Tigers' Erin Brown (3-4) pitched through 2.2 innings, allowing seven runs, three earned, with six hits and four walks.

The Seahawks had eight players collect a hit with two-hit performances by Gamache and Arial Pearce.

UNCW started early when shortstop Mary Sobataka, who had four RBI on Saturday, drove in Vitola on a single after the speedy sophomore reached on an error.

After Towson's Sydni Byers evened the game with a solo round-tripper in the second, the Seahawks countered with three unearned runs in the bottom frame after loading the bases with a Santiago double sandwiched between a pair of walks.

UNCW again loaded the bases following Gamache's homer in the third, scoring a run each on singles by Britt and Bjorson to put the game out of reach.
