Northeastern Rallies Past UNCW, 78-69

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Northeastern scored seven straight points in the final 87 seconds to earn a 78-69 decision over the UNCW women's basketball in the Colonial Athletic Association regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at Trask Coliseum.

The Huskies (18-11, 13-5 CAA) ran their win streak to eight games and clinched a share of the conference's Regular Season title with a win and Drexel loss to North Carolina A&T.

The Seahawks (5-24, 2-16 CAA) will face Hofstra in the opening round of the CAA Women's Basketball Championship next Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Graduate guard Carrie Gross scored a game-high 23 points on her 23rd birthday. The Clinton, Md., product was joined in double figures by Britany Range's 13 markers and Jayde Gamble's 12 points off the bench.

Northeastern was led by sophomore guard Gemima Motema's 20 points while teammate Derin Erdogan contributed 18 points.

UNCW hit 10 of its first 15 shots to hold a 22-15 advantage after the first quarter. The Seahawks maintained their intensity into the second quarter, building as high as a 13-point lead before halftime and carried a 42-31 advantage into the intermission.

The Huskies, however, responded out of the break, scoring 19 of the third period's 27 points, including the quarter's final six markers to enter the final period ahead 50-49.

The game remained within single digits for much of the fourth quarter until Motema followed an Erdogan three-pointer with two lay-ups to go up 78-67 with 47 ticks remaining.

UNCW honored Gross, Asia Henderson and Micah Hoggatt in a special ceremony to commemorate their final home game in Trask Coliseum prior to tip-off.
