Pride Push Past Seahawks in CAA First Round

TOWSON, Maryland – Hofstra's Emma Von Essen rattled off eight straight points, including a pair of corner three-pointers, in the middle of the fourth quarter to push the Pride past UNCW 61-58 in the First Round of the Colonial Athletic Association Women's Basketball Championship at SECU Arena on Wednesday afternoon.

Hofstra improved to 11-19 and advanced to play North Carolina A&T on Thursday. The Seahawks conclude their season with a 5-25 mark.

Graduate guard Carrie Gross' 18 points paced UNCW while junior guard Evan Miller contributed a career-high 15 points. Sophomore guard Jayde Gamble delivered 12 points off the bench for the Seahawks, who shot 43.6 percent (24-of-55).

The Pride, who hit at a 42.1 percent (24-of-57) rate, had four players reach double figures highlighted by CAA Second-Teamer Brandy Thomas' 18 markers. Guard Sorelle Ineza added 13, Von Essen provided 12, and center Zyheima Swint posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Hofstra built a 22-11 lead after the first quarter and extended its advantage to a game-high 14 points three times in the second period. The determined Seahawks, however, mounted a furious 14-0 run over the last 6:09 of the half, including nine straight by Gross and Miller, to even the game at 33-all entering the break.

The Pride scored the first six markers of the second half and maintained the lead throughout the third quarter to carry a close 46-45 margin into the final 10 minutes.

UNCW flipped the advantage with seven of the fourth quarter's first 10 points to lead 52-49 with 3:25 left in the game. Von Essen then sank back-to-back corner triples and added a layup to give the Pride the lead 57-52.

Miller pulled the Seahawks to within a possession twice in the final 1:13, but the Pride's Ineza sank a pair of free throws with seven ticks remaining to seal the verdict.
