Altiers Homers Twice in Saturday Softball Split

COLUMBIA, South Carolina – UNCW totaled a season-high 14 hits vs. Columbia to earn a Saturday split after falling to Illinois in the weekend opener at the Gamecock Invitational at Carolina Softball Stadium.

The Seahawks (5-11) rallied past the Lions (2-6) 6-3 in nine innings after overcoming a 3-0 deficit early. UNCW dropped a 6-1 decision to the Fighting Illini (11-5) early Saturday morning.

Freshman Maddy Altiers homered in both games, her second and third of the year, and collected a combined four hits and three RBI.

Graduate infielder Janel Gamache extended her hitting streak to seven games with a 3-for-8 showing across the two games.

Senior outfielder Morgan Britt became the second Seahawk to have a four-hit game this season, including a pair of doubles, against Columbia.

UNCW concludes the weekend on Sunday with a doubleheader vs. North Carolina A&T (12:30 p.m.) and host South Carolina (3 p.m.) The game vs. the Aggies is considered a non-conference contest and the match against the Gamecocks can be seen on the SEC Network+.

GAME 1 | Illinois 6, UNCW 1

The Fighting Illini scored all their runs after the fourth inning to claim a victory in the inaugural meeting between the two schools.

Illinois' Tori McQueen (2-2) picked up the win with the complete-game performance, allowing one run and four hits.

Right-hander Amberlyn Pearce (0-3) was tagged with the loss after pitching three innings in relief of Emily Winstead, who tossed four frames and allowed one run.

Altiers launched a rocket to straightaway center on the first pitch of her at-bat in the second inning to give the Seahawks an early 1-0 lead.

GAME 2 | UNCW 6, Columbia 3 (9 innings)

UNCW plated one run in the fifth through seventh innings and then used a three-run ninth to propel past the Lions.

Britt and Altiers combined for half of the Seahawks' hits and were joined by Gamache, Tayler Vitola and Jada Santiago with multi-hit games.

Sophomore righty Kara Hammock (3-2) limited Columbia to one hit in six scoreless relief innings to notch her team-high third win of the season.

The Lions' Raquel Reyes (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, and six hits in 3.1 innings of work.

After Vitola and Santiago drove in runs in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively, UNCW tied it with two outs in the top of the seventh on a throwing error that scored Mary Sobataka, who reached on a fielder's choice.

Sobataka tripled in the ninth and scored a batter later on a fielder's choice that allowed Gamache to reach. Altiers, the next batter, again sent the first pitch of the bat over the wall in left-center to put the Seahawks up 6-3 for good.
