Britt, Sobataka Double Twice in Friday Win

STONY BROOK, New York – A pair of run-scoring doubles by Morgan Britt and Mary Sobataka capped a four-run third inning that helped UNCW secure a 10-4 Colonial Athletic Association softball verdict over Stony Brook on Friday afternoon at the University Field.

The Seahawks (13-17, 7-3 CAA) matched their longest win streak of the year with their fourth straight victory. The Seawolves (11-15, 2-7 CAA) snapped their three-game win streak.

Sophomore right-hander Kara Hammock (7-4) pitched her sixth complete game of the season and 14th of her career.

Seawolves righty Ashton Melaas (3-7) suffered the loss in three innings of work. The senior was tagged for six runs, four earned, five hits and a walk.

Six Seahawks collected a hit led by second baseman Tayler Vitola's sixth two-hit performance of 2023. The junior, hitting in the three-hole for the second straight weekend, added a career-high four RBI and scored two runs.
Britt and Sobataka each collected two doubles and drove in a combined five runs.

Five straight Seahawks reached base, with four hits, with two outs to break the game open in the third. Fifth-year Jada Santiago singled home Vitola after Vitola singled up the middle and Janel Gamache worked a walk to start the action.

With two on, shortstop Mary Sobataka clubbed a double to center field that brought home Gamache from second and placed Santiago on third. Britt then stepped to the plate and rifled a two-bagger to right field that cleared the bases and made it 6-0.

Righter fielder Elizabeth Winstead extended her hitting streak to eight games with a single to left to lead off the top of the first. Winstead scored two batters later when Vitola reached on an infield error that allowed her to circle the bases as well.

Vitola drove in two runs with another single to center field in the top of the fourth after Winstead (walk) and Arial Pearce (single) executed a double steal to get into scoring position.

Sobataka and Britt drilled back-to-back doubles again in the seventh to add two insurance runs after the Seawolves had cut the gap to 8-4 with one run in the fourth, two in the fifth and another in the sixth.

The Seahawks and Seawolves continue the series with a single game on Saturday at 3 p.m.
