Seahawks Spin Sixth Straight Tennis Victory

BUIES CREEK, North Carolina – Make it six in a row for the surging UNCW men's tennis team following Thursday's 4-1 romp over state rival Campbell at the Nisbet Tennis Center.
 
The Seahawks boosted their record to 10-5 on the season and won for the second time on the road this spring. The Camels, who will join the Colonial Athletic Association in 2023-24, stand 11-6 on the year.
 
For the second straight match, the Seahawks dropped the doubles point, but rebounded with strong singles play.
 
Trailing 1-0 after doubles, UNCW evened the score when freshman Alex de Gabriele raced past CU's Robin Angles, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 6 singles. Sophomore Harold Huens then gave the Seahawks a 2-1 edge with a 6-1, 6-2, rout of Tomas Balazi at No. 2 singles.
 
Junior Gabe Hurtado extended the score to 3-1 at No. 3 singles by outlasting CU's Lukas Steffen, 2-6, 6-4, 7-4 (4), setting up the clincher by Trey Mallory. The junior from Southampton, Bermuda, nailed down the match by rallying past Benjamin Maes, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5), at the No. 4 slot.
 
The Seahawks travel to Johnson City, Tenn., on Wednesday, Apr. 5, for their next match. UNCW takes on East Tennessee State in a 1 p.m. first toss.
