Seahawks Complete Sweep with Seven-Run Inning

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW softball team poured on seven runs in an inning for the second straight game to complete a Colonial Athletic Association sweep of North Carolina A&T with a 9-5 final at Boseman Field on Sunday morning.

The Seahawks improved to 12-17 overall and 6-3 in the CAA with their second conference sweep. The Aggies stumbled to 6-21 including a 1-5 league mark with their fifth straight loss.

Second baseman Tayler Vitola recorded her third three-hit game this season to go with an RBI, walk and two runs scored. Outfielders Morgan Britt (2-for-4) and Elizabeth Winstead (2-for-4) combined with Vitola for seven of UNCW's 11 hits.

Right-hander Carrigan Ewers (1-3) earned her first win after striking out two in an inning of relief work. Starter Janel Gamache and sophomore Kara Hammock, who collected the save, each tossed three innings in the victory.

N.C. A&T's Megan Ellis (3-1) suffered her first loss in five innings, giving up four runs, three earned, and six hits.

The Seahawks, ahead 1-0 after the first inning, sent 11 batters to the plate to the fourth, scoring seven runs on eight hits and an error. Five different Seahawks collected an RBI, including a two-run double by left fielder Arial Pearce that ricocheted off Aggies' reliever Kiara Richard into left field.

UNCW continues conference play next weekend with a trip to visit new-league member Stony Brook from Apr. 1-2 on Long Island.

WEEKEND NOTES: The Seahawks are 16-1-1 in their last 18 games vs. the Aggies … Winstead hit 5-for-10 this weekend with a pair of doubles … Carson Fleming singled to right field for her first career hit … Pearce drove in a team-high seven runs vs. N.C. A&T … UNCW hit .378 (28-for-74) with three home runs and 24 runs scored in the series …  The Seahawks have totaled 48 runs in the fourth and fifth innings … UNCW is undefeated at home in CAA play … The Seahawks are 7-4 when leading after the first inning and 12-2 when out-hitting opponents.
