Sophomores Power UNCW to Twinbill Sweep

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW erupted for 15 runs and 17 hits, including an inside-the-park grand slam by Arial Pearce, to sweep a doubleheader over North Carolina A&T in Colonial Athletic Association softball action on Saturday afternoon at Boseman Field.

The Seahawks (11-17, 5-3 CAA) run-ruled the Aggies (6-20, 1-4 CAA) 8-0 in five innings before using a seven-run fifth inning to earn a 7-3 victory in game two.

Sophomores were at the center of UNCW's success with both winning pitchers – Kara Hammock and Emily Winstead – and UNCW's three home runs –Mackenzie Amodeo, Lauren Cope and Pearce – all coming from the second-year class.

Sunday's series finale will now begin at 10 a.m. due to expected rainfall tomorrow afternoon.

GAME 1 | UNCW 8, N.C. A&T 0 (five innings)

Hammock (6-4) spun a one-hit gem in the circle and Cope, making her first career start in right field, launched her first career home run to cap the 8-0 victory.

Five of UNCW's nine hits went for extra bases including Cope's four-bagger and two doubles by sophomore left fielder Elizabeth Winstead, who batted lead-off for the first time in her career.

Hammock carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before N.C. A&T's Katriel Williams blooped a single that fell just beyond the dirt behind first base. The 6-2 sophomore struck out nine, including five straight between the first and second innings.

UNCW sent all nine players to the plate in the first inning beginning with a double down the left-field line by Winstead. The first six batters reached base behind a series of hits and Aggie errors that put the Seahawks ahead 3-0 early.

After plating runs in the second and third innings, shortstop Mary Sobataka shot a double to left field that scored Morgan Britt, who reached on a bunt. Cope, two batters later, rocketed a 0-1 pitch to the left field for a two-run home run that ended the game.

GAME 2 | UNCW 7, N.C. A&T 3

Pearce's first career grand slam put the bow on a fifth inning that already featured a three-run shot by Amodeo to put UNCW in front after N.C. A&T scored the first run of the game in the top frame.

The Seahawks recorded eight hits and seven runs in the fifth. First baseman Janel Gamache and Sobatake reached on singles before Amodeo's missile beyond the left-center wall.

Cope, Logan Bjorson and Winstead, the outfielder all reached on singles and then scored when Pearce sent the first pitch of her at-bat to the right-field corner.

The contest appeared to be a right-handed pitching duel between UNCW's Emily Winstead (2-3), who struck out six, and the Aggies' Joey Barkhimer (1-5) with neither allowing a hit through the first four innings.

N.C. A&T cashed in a Makayla Layton one-out double, the first hit of the game, to score a run in the top of the fifth on a Seahawk mishap.

The Aggies scored twice in the seventh but right-hander Carrigan Ewers, who pitched the final two innings for UNCW, shut the door with two runners in scoring position to seal the verdict.

GAME NOTES: Elizabeth Winstead has a career-long six-game hitting streak … Sobataka has hit safely in her last four games … Tayler Vitola did not bat lead-off for the first time this season … UNCW is 2-1 vs. N.C. A&T … Pearce had a career-high four RBI … The outfielder Winstead joined Britt as the only Seahawks with two doubles in a game in 2023.
