Seahawks Win Third Straight Tennis Match

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Junior Gabe Hurtado clinched the match for the first time this season and UNCW reeled off its third straight men's tennis victory in a 5-2 decision over visiting DePaul early Monday at the UNCW courts.
 
Playing in unseasonably cool weather, the Seahawks, 7-5, completed a sweep of all three matches in their annual Battle at the Beach invitational, taking down Illinois State, Youngstown State and DePaul in a six-day span. Coach Mait DuBois' club also kept its home record unblemished in six outings this spring.
 
DePaul, 8-11, now stands 1-7 on the road.
 
In Monday's match, only the second ever meeting between the two schools, UNCW secured the early doubles point after winning the first two matches off the court. Hurtado and Trey Mallory, playing No. 2 doubles, clinched the critical point with a 6-3 verdict over DePaul's Jona Gitschel and Aleksa Krivokapic.
 
The Seahawks then won the first four matches in singles to put the match away early. Freshman Alex De Gabriele started it off with an easy 6-4, 6-0, triumph against DePaul's Sven Moser at No. 6 singles and No. 118 Reece Falck followed with a 6-4, 6-2, victory vs. Shourya Verma at No. 2 singles.
 
Hurtado, playing No. 3 singles for the first time this year, delivered the match clincher by racing past Krivokapic, 6-3, 6-4.
 
The Seahawks continue their lengthy five-match home stand on Friday, Mar. 24, with a 2 p.m. match vs. Dartmouth at the UNCW courts.
