NEWARK, Del. – The UNCW softball team closed out its Colonial Athletic Association road weekend with a 2-0 loss at Delaware on a cold, windy Sunday afternoon at the UD Softball Stadium.
The Blue Hens improved to 11-12 overall and own a 4-2 CAA mark with the sweep. The Seahawks dipped to 9-16 and stand 3-3 in the circuit.
Delaware right-hander Emily Winburn (8-5) recorded her second complete game of the weekend, limiting UNCW to five hits and stranding six runners on.
Graduate righty Janel Gamache (3-4) took the loss in four innings of work. The Exeter, R.I., product surrendered two runs on four hits while striking out a pair.
The Blue Hens scored both their runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on back-to-back two-out doubles by Brittney Mendoza and Kristen Luzon after first baseman Kiara Mills singled up the middle earlier in the inning.
The Seahawks brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the top of the seventh when Skylar Stockton, who went 2-for-3, and Logan Bjorson legged out infield singles. Senior Morgan Britt, however, grounded out to the second baseman to end the final threat.
UNCW begins a four-game homestand on Wednesday when it welcomes East Carolina back to Boseman Field at 5 p.m. The Seahawks and Pirates previously met in the opening weekend, ECU earning a 9-1 in five innings.
