Softball Drops CAA Doubleheader at Delaware

NEWARK, Delaware – The UNCW softball team had its four-game win streak halted with a pair of low-scoring Colonial Athletic Association setbacks at Delaware on Saturday afternoon at the Delaware Softball Stadium.

The Blue Hens (10-12, 3-2 CAA) used a three-run fifth inning to push past the Seahawks (9-15, 3-2 CAA) 3-1 in the early game before walking off game two by a 2-1 margin.

UNCW left fielder Arial Pearce recorded three hits and an RBI over the two games, extending her hitting streak to a career-high six games.

The series concludes with a 1 p.m. rubber match on Sunday.

GAME 1 | Delaware 3, UNCW 1

Delaware's Emily Winburn (7-5) and UNCW's Kara Hammock (5-4) each pitched complete games and traded zeroes over the first four innings before both teams plated runs in the fifth.

Winburn tossed seven innings, allowing five hits and a run while Hammock struck out four and surrendered three runs, two earned, in six innings.

The Seahawks struck first with a two-out single up the middle by second baseman Tayler Vitola to score Logan Bjorson, who singled earlier in the inning.

The Blue Hens responded in the fifth's bottom half to score three runs on three hits and an error, including a Hanna Garber triple to right-center that gave Delaware the 3-1 lead it would hold onto.

GAME 2 | Delaware 2, UNCW 1

The second pitching duel of the day featured Delaware graduate hurler Taylor Wroten besting the UNCW duo of Emily Winstead and Carrigan Ewers (0-3) courtesy of a walk-off single by Blue Hens right fielder Grace Rudolph.

A Pearce RBI single in the third to score Morgan Britt, gave Winstead a 1-0 cushion as she limited Delaware to three hits and no runs over four innings with three strikeouts.

The Blue Hens evened the game in the sixth inning when Garber crossed home on a single down the right field line off the bat of Katie Scheivert.

Delaware's first two batters- Chloe Blantz and Kristen Luzon - hit safely to start the bottom of the seventh with Blantz scoring the game-winning run on Rudolph's knock to right field.

GAME NOTES: Hammock made her third career start vs. the Blue Hens … The Seahawks totaled nine hits on Saturday … The teams have split the last six meetings dating back to the start of last season … UNCW visited Delaware for the first time since 2019 … The Seahawks are 5-5 in March … Skylar Stockton was hit by a pitch in both games.
