Offense Relentless In Series-Opening Win

UNCW scored in seven innings and piled up 19 hits

TOWSON, Md. – Dillon Lifrieri collected a career-high four hits and Connor Kane delivered four innings of shutout relief as UNCW topped Towson, 12-6, on Friday in Colonial Athletic Association baseball action at Schuerholz Park.

The Seahawks improved to 11-7 overall with the road win and 3-1 in the conference. The Tigers, meanwhile, saw their two-game winning streak halted and slipped to 6-13 and 1-3.

Lifrieri and Brock Wills combined for seven hits at the top of the lineup and Taber Mongero added three hits of his own as every player in the lineup had a hit and scored a run.

Kane earned his first collegiate save, allowing a hit and a walk over a career-ling four innings. Jacob Shafer (3-1) earned the win going the first five innings.

Casey Bishop had two hits for the Tigers, who managed just one hit over the final six innings.

Reliever Luis Rivera (2-1) took the loss.

The Seahawks and Tigers played game two of the series at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

How it happened: Trailing 6-5 through three innings, UNCW plated two in the top of the fourth to take the lead and another in the fifth to make it 8-6. Lifrieri and Tanner Thach opened the fourth with consecutive singles and Alec DeMartino doubled to left to tie the game. Two batters later John Newton broke the tie with a ground ball out to second base. In the fifth, Wills singled and moved around to third on a Lifrieri double. Thach followed with an RBI ground out to the right side to make 8-6.

Notes: Towson held a 3-1 lead after the first, 4-3 after the second and 6-5 after the third … Jac Croom extended his career-long hitting streak to 11 games with a second inning single … Wills and Lifrieri both had seven plate appearances … Marsh and DeMartino now have three-game hitting streaks.
