Elon Hands Seahawks 5-2 Setback

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Elon narrowly won the doubles point and added four singles victories to trip up UNCW, 5-2, in the Colonial Athletic Association women's tennis opener for the Seahawks on Thursday at the UNCW courts.
 
The Phoenix won their seventh straight match to improve to 12-3 this spring and 2-0 in the CAA. The Seahawks had their record evened at 6-6 after dropping their CAA debut and fourth consecutive outing.
 
The doubles point came down to the wire as the Phoenix squeezed out a close match at the No. 3 position to grab the early lead. The team of Helen Sarikulaya and Miray Konar edged UNCW's Stela Joksimovic and Meredith Taylor, 7-6 (5), to nail down the point for the Phoenix.
 
Elon hiked the score to 2-0 with a victory at No. 3 singles before the Seahawks got on the board when freshman Eda Arli carved out a 6-2, 6-4, decision over  Elon's Madison Cordisco at No. 2 singles.
 
The Seahawks, 5-2 at home this spring after concluding a two-match homestand, evened the score at 2-all when graduate student Lauren Gish raced past Elon's Helen Sarikulaya, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 4 singles, but the Phoenix closed out the match by stringing together victories at the No. 5, No. 6 and No. 1 positions.
 
The Seahawks, with seven matches left in the regular season, begin a stretch of four straight matches on the road with a visit to Staten Island on Thursday, Mar. 23, to play Wagner's Seahawks in a 2 p.m. contest.
 
UNCW's next home date is scheduled for Friday, Apr. 14, vs. longtime rival and future CAA member Campbell at 2 p.m.
