Seahawks Open Battle at the Beach With Win

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW men's tennis team kicked off its annual Battle at the Beach round robin with a 4-1 victory over visiting Illinois State early Wednesday at the UNCW Courts.
 
The Seahawks evened their record at 5-5 this spring with the decision over the Redbirds. ISU, kicking off a spring break road trip to the North Carolina coast, dropped to 6-9. The two teams are joined by Youngstown State and DePaul in the five-day round robin event.
 
The Seahawks won the doubles point for the fourth time this season and then tacked on three singles victories to knock off the Missouri Valley Conference club. ISU has dropped three consecutive matches and four of its last six matches.
 
UNCW grabbed a quick 1-0 advantage when the No 2 tandem of Alex DeGabriele and Gabe Hurtado defeated ISU's Tin Ostro and Emiliano Gonzales, 6-4.
 
Junior Gabe Hurtado, playing the No. 4 slot, then got the Seahawks rolling in singles with a 6-1, 6-3 verdict over ISU's Melker Isaksson. After a loss at the top of the lineup, freshman Alex DeGabriele extended the score to 3-1 by trimming Emiliano Gonzales, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 6 position.
 
Junior Bekhzod Rasamatov clinched the match for the first time this season by pounding ISU's Arvid Hjalte, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 2 singles.
 
UNCW improved to 2-0 lifetime against ISU after winning the first pairing in 2013 and taking Wednesday's rematch.
 
The Seahawks continue action in the event on Friday, Mar. 17, with a 2 p.m. match vs. Youngstown State.
