Sobataka's Walk-Off Triple Caps Towson Sweep

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW shortstop Mary Sobataka capped a three-hit day with a walk-off triple to help the Seahawks sweep Towson with a 6-5 verdict in Colonial Athletic Association softball action on a rainy Sunday morning at Boseman Field.

The Seahawks (8-13, 3-0 CAA) bested the Tigers (8-8, 0-3 CAA) in all three games for their first conference sweep in two years and have won four of their last six contests.

UNCW used three pitchers to navigate through a chilly, drizzling morning with sophomore Kara Hammock (4-3) earning the win with 2.2 scoreless relief innings and a pair of strikeouts.

Towson right-hander Cheyenne Beayon (0-1) suffered the complete game loss, allowing six runs and 10 hits in 6.0+ innings.

After two Tiger rallies made it 5-5, left fielder Arial Pearce worked a full-count walk to start the bottom of the seventh. Sobataka, who drove in another run in the second inning, shot the second pitch of the at-bat the opposite way over the head of Towson right fielder Cara Bohner.

Pearce raced around the bases and slid headfirst toward the plate, just ahead of the cutoff throw home, and popped up to join her celebrating teammate around Sobataka near third base.

The Seahawks, who had 10 hits,  scored a pair of runs in the first and second innings, including a two-RBI single by freshman Maddy Altiers in the first frame.

Trailing 4-0, the Tigers mounted their first comeback with a four-run fourth highlighted by a two-run home run to straightaway center by Madyson Peters. The Towson catcher evened the score again an inning after with an RBI after Pearce briefly put the Seahawks up 5-4 with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth.

UNCW next welcomes North Carolina to Boseman Field for a 5 p.m. battle on Wednesday.
