Cougars Complete Sweep of Seahawks

CHARLESTON, South Carolina  – Colonial Athletic Association co-leader Charleston scored 16 unanswered points as part of a 22-2 run late in the first half to race past UNCW, 93-61, in a clash of two of the league's top teams on Wednesday night at TD Arena.

The Cougars, who trimmed the Seahawks, 71-69, four weeks ago at Trask Coliseum, improved to 23-3 overall and 11-2 in the conference with their 14th victory in 15 home appearances. The Seahawks had their four-game winning streak snapped and stand 19-7 and 9-4.

Sophomore forward Ante Brzovic anchored four Cougars in double figures with a game-high 23 points. Graduate guard Pat Robinson II and sophomore forward Ben Burnham added 18 points apiece and graduate guard Jaylon Scott finished with 11.

For the first time this season, no UNCW player reached double digits. Sophomore guard Jamarii Thomas was high man for the Seahawks with nine points.

The Cougars shot 52.5 percent from the floor and went 10-for-24 from long distance in the rout. The Seahawks managed 39.2 percent shooting, including only 4-for-20 from deep.

"I was very disappointed," Takayo Siddle, UNCW's third-year head coach, said after the game.  "We knew they would go on runs. We just have to play better. We have to regroup. We have to have two good days of prep to get ready for Northeastern."

The 32-point loss margin was the second largest of the season behind UConn (86-50 on Nov. 18) and the largest in conference play in Siddle's three seasons.

The Seahawks got off to a strong start before the Cougars rallied midway through the first period and used a big run at the end of the half to lead by 19 points, 46-27, at intermission.

It was all Charleston after the break.

The Cougars scored the first four points of the second half to hike the margin to 50-27 and after the Seahawks responded with a seven-point spurt, Charleston scored 12 unanswered points over a 3:30 stretch and the lead ballooned to 62-34.

Charleston later reached its largest lead of the contest, 79-45, when Burnham scored on a layup over UNCW's Eric Van Der Heijden with 6:40 left on the clock.

UNCW used an 8-0 rally for a 10-5 advantage early on the contest as senior guard Shykeim Phillips dropped in a pair of free throws at the 15:47 mark.

The Seahawks still led by five points, 14-9, when Charleston responded with an 9-0 run over the next 1:37 span, capped by a Brzovic three-pointer from the top of the key for an 18-14 edge. Brzovic wound up with 15 points in the first half and Robinson II contributed 13 as the Cougars shot 51.9 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes.

A monster dunk by Trazarien White kept the Seahawks close at the six-minute mark, 28-25, but the Cougars outscored UNCW, 22-2, over a 6:40 stretch to break the game open.

The Seahawks return to Trask Coliseum on Saturday (Feb. 11) for the annual homecoming game vs. Northeastern. The 7 p.m. tip will be the lone regular season meeting between the two clubs.
