Seahawks Handle Huskies For 20th Victory

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Sophomore guard Trazarien White scored 14 of his game-high 23 points in the second half to help UNCW collect the ninth 20-win season in the school's history with a workmanlike 71-59 victory over visiting Northeastern on Saturday night at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks improved to 20-7 overall and 10-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association with the win before a sellout Homecoming crowd of 5,221. UNCW recorded back-to-back 20-win seasons for the third time in the program's history.

The Huskies lost their sixth game in a row and plummeted to 8-16 and 4-9. It was the only regular season clash between the two clubs due to the CAA's new scheduling matrix.

UNCW climbed into third place in the loop with the wire-to-wire victory. Charleston and Hofstra share top billing with 12-2 records and the Seahawks sit two games back at 10-4. Towson stands fourth at 9-4.

White led all scorers with 23 points – three off his career high – on 7-for-11 shooting and 9-for-12 at the free throw line. Senior forward Amari Kelly and senior guard Shykeim Phillips pitched in 14 points apiece for the Seahawks, who shot 45.5 percent from the floor.

Junior guard Jahmyl Telfort paced three Huskies in double figures with 18 points. Former Seahawk Joe Pridgen contributed 14 points and junior forward Coleman Stucke finished with 10.

UNCW bounced back from Wednesday's difficult loss at league-leader Charleston in a big way, holding the Huskies to 20 points in the first half and keeping the Boston-based club at bay with solid free throw shooting in the second half. The Seahawks went 18-for-21 at the charity stripe in the final period to win at Trask Coliseum for the 10th time in 12 appearances this season.

"I knew they would come in there and fight," third-year UNCW head coach Takayo Siddle said of the Huskies. "Some early foul trouble got them out of rhythm. In the second half, we got a little loose defensively, but got timely stops to close the game out."

UNCW capitalized on NU's early foul woes to grab a 33-20 advantage at halftime. The Seahawks held the Huskies to just one field goal over the last 6:54 of the first half to break away early from Bill Coen's club.

After junior playmaker Glen McClintock hit the front end of a bonus situation to get the Huskies within 23-19 with just over five minutes left in the opening half, the Seahawks closed out the frame with 10-1 run to fashion a 13-point lead at the break.

Telfort and Chris Doherty, NU's top two scorers, each collected three fouls in the first 20 minutes to limit the Huskies on the offensive end.

In the second period, the Seahawks increased the lead – their largest of the game - to 46-30 on a pair of free throws by White, but the Huskies reeled off 10 answered points to chop the deficit to 46-40. A triple in the left corner by Stucke with 12:41 on the clock got the Huskies within six points.

UNCW responded, however, with a 13-3 spurt, capped by another free throw by White with just over eight minutes on the clock to hike the margin back to 14 points, 57-43.
