Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Joe Browning

New Streak Remains Intact For Seahawks

WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia – After cranking out a school-record 13-game winning streak earlier this season, the UNCW men's basketball team is hot again.

The Seahawks recorded their fourth consecutive victory early Saturday, leading wire-to-wire to defeat host William & Mary, 70-63, in a Colonial Athletic Association rematch at Kaplan Arena. The Tribe upset the Seahawks, 69-67, back on Jan. 14 at Trask Coliseum.

UNCW, 19-6 overall and 9-3 in the CAA, remains near the top of the CAA standings as the final month of the season moves ahead. The Seahawks improved to 5-1 in conference road games with three roadies left on the docket.

W&M, 9-16 and 4-8, dropped its third in a row and sixth in the last seven outings. The Tribe has not won since a 77-74 decision vs. Stony Brook on Jan. 26.

Sophomore guard Trazarien White matched the 21 points he scored against the Tribe 21 days ago at Trask with another 21 points on Saturday, going 8-for-12 from the floor and 3-for-4 at the free throw line. The Mansfield, Texas, product snared six rebounds.

The Seahawks got a career night from junior guard Donovan Newby, who sank 7-of-10 shots – many of the mid-range variety - and all four of his free throw tries. Senior guard Shykeim Phillips added 10 points and four assists for the Seahawks, who shot 50 percent for the second consecutive game.

It marked the first time since the championship game of last year's CBI Invitational that the Seahawks featured two players with 20+ points in a game.

W&M also ended up eclipsing the 50 percent plateau, including 54.5 percent in the final period. Graduate guard Chris Mullins paced the Tribe with 19 points and sophomore guard Tyler Rice contributed 14.

"I thought all of our guys were connected and played very well," said Takayo Siddle, UNCW's third-year head coach. "We got off to a really good start. They battled back, but a good team responds to adversity. We came back out in the second half with the same energy we came out with and were able to execute."

The Seahawks built a comfortable cushion out of the gate before the Tribe closed the gap to three points, 31-28, at halftime. UNCW scored the first seven points of the final period and extended the lead to as many as 13 points midway through the half before sealing the win with superior free throw shooting down the stretch.

In the decisive half, the Seahawks extended their lead to 13 points, 56-43, on a triple by Newby with 6:40 left on the clock. W&M stormed back, however, and narrowed the deficit to 56-49 on a three-pointer by Rice at the 5:24 mark.

That's when UNCW stepped up at the charity stripe. The Seahawks converted three consecutive bonus situations and wound up going 11-for-11 at the line in the second half, including 10 straight in the final five minutes.

The Seahawks capitalized on W&M's early shooting woes to sprint out to a 15-2 lead over the first nine minutes of the contest. White converted a bucket inside to cap an eight-point run for UNCW, while the Tribe misfired on nine of its first 10 field goals attempts.

The lead stayed at double digits until the Tribe came alive midway through the opening period. W&M used a 6-0 mini-run over a 2:17 span to get back in it. A three-ball by Gabe Dorsey on the left wing closed the gap to 21-15.

W&M used another string of seven unanswered points in the final minute to climb within one point. Mullins dropped in both ends of a bonus situation with 46 seconds left in the half to cut the deficit to 29-28 before White responded with a bucket inside with 24 ticks left to get the Seahawk lead back to three points at intermission

The Seahawks conclude a two-game road swing on Wednesday, Feb. 8, by traveling to Charleston to face CAA co-leader Charleston at TD Arena. UNCW then returns home to entertain Northeastern in the annual Homecoming Game on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 7 p.m.
