Cougars Down Seahawks in Overtime

CHARLESTON, South Carolina – Charleston outscored UNCW 13-5 in overtime to rally past the Seahawks 71-63 in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball action on Friday night at TD Arena.

The Cougars improved to 9-11 overall and are 4-6 in the CAA. The Seahawks fell to 4-16 overall and stand 1-8 in league play.

Charleston guard Jalia Roberts delivered a season-high 24 points to pair with 10 rebounds and four assists. The Cantonment, Fla., native was joined in double figures by freshman guard Alexis Andrews (18) and junior forward Adaora Onwumelu (12).

The Seahawks were paced by graduate guard Carrie Gross's 22 points, her fourth game this season with over 20 points. Sophomore guard Jayde Gamble contributed 10 points.

The Cougars, down 58-57 with 3.5 seconds in regulation, sent Andrews to the free throw line after a UNCW foul, where she missed the first but converted the second of two shots to force overtime.

Roberts hit the extra period's first shot and Charleston never trailed in overtime to rally from an 18-point first-half deficit.

The Seahawks started hot, shooting 83.3 percent (10-of-12) in the first quarter. The Cougars scored the game's first four points before UNCW scored 23 of the next 27 points to take a commanding 23-8 lead into the second quarter.

Gross connected on a pair of free throws to make it 27-9 at the 7:39 mark in the second period. The Cougars steadily cut away at the deficit until midway through when Andrews rattled off eight straight points to trim the score to 29-20 at the 3:03 mark.

UNCW pushed its advantage back to 12 points twice, but a three-pointer by Charleston's Roberts with 27 seconds left made it a 34-25 halftime score in favor of the Seahawks.

The Cougars continued to fight back after the intermission with a 9-0 run that was capped by an Andrews layup to flip the advantage to the Cougars, 45-43, with two minutes left in the third quarter. An Asia Henderson layup evened the score at 45-all entering the fourth quarter.

The Seahawks led the entirety of the final regulation period and were ahead 58-57 with three seconds to go before the Cougars tied the game at the charity stripe.

UNCW returns to Trask Coliseum on Sunday for a 2 p.m. matchup with North Carolina A&T. The Seahawks will celebrate National Girl's and Women in Sports Day in the Aggies' first visit to Trask as a conference rival.
