Seahawks Set Single-Game Rebound Record

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – A dominant effort on the glass powered the UNCW women's basketball team to a school-record 60 rebounds and a 63-47 victory over Charleston to split the season series between the schools at Trask Coliseum on Friday night.

The Seahawks, who never trailed, upped their record to 5-21 and are 2-13 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Cougars dipped to 11-15 with a 6-10 conference mark.

UNCW shot 38.1 percent (24-of-63) from the floor and limited Charleston to a 29.9 percent (20-of-67) showing from the field.

Graduate guard Carrie Gross dropped 20 points while junior guard Evan Miller matched her career-high 13 points for the third time season. Post players Asia Henderson and Lexi Jackson each hauled in 14 boards, with Henderson's mark being a new career-high for the Wichita State transfer.

The Cougars had three players – Jaila Roberts (13), Jada Logan (12) and Alexis Andrews (10) – reach double figures in the loss.

UNCW tallied 37 rebounds in the first half, including 18 on the offensive glass that led to 21 second-chance points, to build a 36-17 advantage at the break.

Based on available records, the 60 rebounds surpassed the previous high of 57 set on Jan. 18, 2007 vs. Georgia State.

After the Seahawks scored the game's first five points, Charleston countered with two baskets to make it 5-4 before UNCW went on a 14-3 run to hold its first double-digit lead of the contest, 19-7, at the 8:16 mark in the second quarter.

The Seahawks reached their largest lead, 21 points, three times in the second half with the first being a Micah Hoggatt free throw to make it 50-29 with 21 seconds in the third period.

UNCW next embarks on its final road swing of the season on Sunday with a visit to play North Carolina A&T. Tip-off from the Corbett Center in Greensboro, N.C. is at 2 p.m.
