Softball Rallies with Three-Run Fifth Inning

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – A three-hit, three-run fifth inning put the UNCW softball team back in the win column with a 3-2 victory vs. Eastern Kentucky in the weekend opener at Boseman Field on Friday night.

The Seahawks hiked their record to 3-7 in 2023 while the Colonels dropped to 8-4 this season.

Sophomore right-hander Emily Winstead (1-1) tossed three scoreless innings in relief of starter Amberlyn Pearce, who allowed two runs, one earned, in four innings of work.

EKU's Lauren Narvaez (0-1) suffered her first setback of the young season, giving up six hits in six innings.

The Colonels jumped ahead early with runs in the first and fourth innings before UNCW staged its comeback.

Senior right fielder Morgan Britt started the bottom of the fifth with a bunt and proceeded to steal second base.

Catcher Jentri Meadows, who pinch-hit a batter later, singled through the left side to plate Britt and took second on the play. Fifth-year Logan Bjorson then bunted over Meadows to third to put the tying run 60 feet away with one out.

Second baseman Tayler Vitola reached second on a fielder's choice that scored Meadows to tie the game. The Seahawks' second sac-bunt of the frame came courtesy of Arial Pearce, who moved Vitola to third.

Shortstop Mary Sobataka then shot the second pitch of her at-bat to left field that plated Vitola to complete the comeback.

UNCW is back in action tomorrow with a doubleheader between Appalachian State (3 p.m.) and EKU (5:30 p.m.) at Boseman Field.
