Seahawks Fall to Mountaineers and Colonels

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – A pair of late rallies by Appalachian State and Eastern Kentucky spoiled both games of UNCW's Saturday softball doubleheader at Boseman Field.

The Seahawks (3-9) fell to the Mountaineers (6-3) 6-4 in the afternoon game before the Colonels (6-3) plated five runs in the seventh inning to down UNCW 7-5 in the nightcap.

UNCW concludes the weekend on Sunday with a twinbill vs. Georgetown (11:30 a.m.) and App State (2 p.m.).

GAME 1 | Appalachian State 6, UNCW 4

App State used a four-run sixth inning to rally past the Seahawks 6-4 in UNCW's first game on Saturday.

Right-hander Kaylie Northrop (2-0) picked up the win with a complete game effort. The Richland, Wash., product allowed seven hits and four runs to go with five strikeouts and two walks.

The sophomore duo of Kara Hammock (1-2) and Emily Winstead totaled every out for the Seahawks, surrendering 12 hits and six runs.

Four Mountaineers – Kaley Coltrain, Kayt Houston, Taylor Thorp and Addie Wray – each recorded multi-hit games with Coltrain, who homered, and Houston combining for five RBI.

Infielders Janel Gamache and Tayler Vitola recorded two-hit games for UNCW, including Vitola's 100th career hit in the bottom of the fifth inning. Senior right fielder Morgan Britt rocketed her second career home run with a three-run shot in the fourth inning.

With the Seahawks ahead 3-2 entering the sixth, the Mountaineers sent seven hitters to the plate where they scored four runs on four hits, highlighted by Coltrain's two-out, two-run round-tripper to left center that made it 6-3.

UNCW sent the would-be tying run to the batter's box in the bottom of the seventh after scoring a run, but App was able to quell the threat.

GAME 2 | EKU 7, UNCW 5

EKU's first five batters reached safely in the top of the seventh to stage the second comeback of the day against UNCW.

The Colonels' Brooke Davis (2-0) held steady through seven innings despite allowing eight hits and five runs, three unearned, to pick up the win.

Gamache (1-2) was tagged with her second loss of the season after allowing seven hits and four runs, two earned, in 6.0+ innings.

The Colonels, trailing 5-2 entering the final inning, plated five runs, including a two-run double by Jeanay Riley, to flip the advantage in their favor, 7-5.

The Seahawks built a 5-2 lead in the fifth inning with a two-run double off the bat of Gamache, who has totaled a hit in 10 of her last 11 games, after center fielder Skylar Stockton singled home a run earlier in the inning to break a 2-2 tie.
