Stony Brook Surges Past UNCW, 64-46

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Stony Brook outscored UNCW 21-8 in the second quarter to surge past UNCW 64-46 in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball action on Sunday afternoon at Trask Coliseum.

The Seawolves (16-9, 10-4 CAA) earned their third straight win and swept the season series against the Seahawks (4-21, 1-13 CAA).

Graduate guard Carrie Gross paced UNCW with 20 points, her sixth contest with at least 20 points this season.

Stony Brook guard Gigi Gonzalez posted a game-high 22 points to go with three assists and three steals. The Miramar, Fla., product was joined in double figures by sophomore forward Sherese Pittman and graduate guard Anastasia Warren.

The Seahawks entered the second period ahead 14-11 before the Seawolves flipped the score with the quarter's first five points. Gross briefly gave the Seahawks a 17-16 lead with a three-pointer at the 8:02 mark, but Stony Brook rattled off 16 of the next 21 points to hold a 32-22 advantage at halftime.

The Seawolves erupted for 13 unanswered points over the first 4:55 of the third quarter to increase their lead to a game-high 23, 45-22, and went on to win 64-46.

UNCW is back in action next Friday for its annual Play4Kay game vs. Charleston at Trask Coliseum at 7 p.m.
