Seahawks Drop Twinbill in Greensboro

GREENSBORO, North Carolina – The UNCW softball team closed out the Spiro Classic with two setbacks to Morehead State and host UNCG Greensboro on Sunday at the UNCG Softball Stadium.

The Eagles (2-2) rallied late and downed the Seahawks (2-7) 5-2 in eight innings while the Spartans (7-3) produced two four-run innings to best UNCW 9-1 in five innings.

The Seahawks return to Boseman Field next weekend to stage their second home tournament featuring Appalachian State, Eastern Kentucky and Georgetown from Feb. 24-26.

GAME 1 | Morehead State 5, UNCW 2 (8 innings)

MSU tied the game 2-all in the top of the seventh with RBI doubles off the bats of Emily Williams and Kaytlyn Cripps before plating three runs in the extra frame to pick up the win.

The Eagles' Madi Ogden (1-1) earned the win with an eight-inning complete game. The 5-6 right-hander allowed six hits and two runs while striking out eight and walking five.

Two-way righty Janel Gamache (1-1) took the loss after surrendering seven hits, five runs, three earned with five strikeouts in 7.1 innings. The Exeter, R.I., native has tossed seven or more innings in both starts this season.

Gamache extended her hit streak to seven games with a two-run RBI single through the right side in the bottom of the first.

The Seahawks maintained the 2-0 lead into the seventh when MSU evened the score courtesy of Williams and Cripps' consecutive two-baggers.

The Eagles cashed in a bases-loaded, no-out opportunity in the top of the eighth with three runs, two unearned, with a sac-fly by shortstop Peyton Jordan and a two-run RBI single by Williams, who drove in three runs in the game.

GAME 2 | UNCG 9, UNCW 1 (5 innings)

The Spartans plated four runs in the second and third innings before adding another score in the bottom of the fourth to handle the Seahawks in the weekend finale.

UNCG scored runs on five extra-base hits, including home runs by catcher Delaney Cumbie and third baseman Maycin Brown, off UNCW starter Emily Winstead (0-1), who suffered the loss in 1.1 innings of work.

The Spartans' Maddie Spell (2-0) picked up the win, tossing a five-inning complete game with a pair of strikeouts.

Seahawk left fielder Arial Pearce drove in her first run of the season in the top of the first on a fielder's choice to score Tayler Vitola.
