Spartans, Eagles Edge Seahawks on Saturday

GREENSBORO, North Carolina – The UNCW softball team dropped two close games on Saturday to UNC Greensboro and Morehead State as part of the Spiro Classic at UNCG Softball Stadium.

The Seahawks (2-5) held leads in both contests before falling to the Spartans (5-3) and Eagles (1-1) by a 4-3 score in both games.

UNCW concludes the weekend on Sunday with another twinbill vs. MSU (11 a.m. on FloSports) and UNCG (4 p.m. on ESPN+). Live stats will continue to be available on UNCWStats.com.

GAME 1 | UNCG 4, UNCW 3

Designated player and pitcher Jorde Chartrand (2-3) connected on the go-ahead home run in the fifth inning to cap a three RBI game that also saw the right-hander pick up the win in the circle for the Spartans.

After the Seahawks rallied in the third and fourth innings to take a 3-2 lead, Chartrand put UNCG back in front when she sent the first pitch of the at-bat over the left-center fence with two outs in the fifth to also score Samantha Lagrama.

Junior right-hander Carrigan Ewers (0-2) took the loss, allowing two hits and two runs in two innings of relief.

Lagrama and Chartrand both drove in one run for the Spartans in the top of the first off UNCW starter Amberlyn Pearce, who tossed four innings on Saturday, to take an early 2-0 lead.

The Seahawks evened the game in the third when graduate first baseman Janel Gamache stepped to the plate with two out and Arial Pearce on base. The reigning Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week launched her second round-tripper in as many games to tie the game 2-all.

Senior center fielder Skylar Stockton capped a two-hit day with an RBI single up the middle to score Santiago and briefly give the Seahawks the advantage in the fourth before Chartrand's homer an inning later.
