Seahawks Clinch Top-4 CAA Berth In 2OT

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania – UNCW clinched an important double bye in the upcoming Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball championship with a hard-earned 72-71 double overtime victory over Drexel on Thursday night at the Daskalakis Center.

The Seahawks improved to 21-7 and 11-4 in the CAA by beating the Dragons in the only game between the two teams during the regular season. Drexel fell to 15-13 and 9-7 and lost for the first time in eight conference home games in 2022-23.

Sophomore guard Trazarien White of UNCW notched his third double-double of the season and fifth of his career with 26 points and 12 rebounds. Junior guard Nick Farrar added 19 points off the bench and senior guard Shykeim Phillips contributed 10 points, six rebounds and three assists.

Sophomore guard Yami Butler of Drexel tied White for game scoring honors with a career-high 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Junior forward Amari Williams finished with 14 points, nine rebounds and two blocks for the Dragons.

In the only game of the regular season between the two teams, the Dragons jumped out early on the Seahawks, but Takayo Siddle's club rallied in the second half to force overtime and then outlasted the Dragons in the two extra sessions.

The game was undecided until the final possession. Leading 72-71, the Seahawks turned the ball over on the Drexel end of the court, setting up a last-second three-point attempt by Luke House. House's game-winning attempt caromed off the rim, however, handing the Seahawks their sixth conference road victory of the season.

"Man, we like to make it hard," said a relieved Siddle, UNCW's fourth-year head coach. "It came down to getting two stops to end the game. I'm very proud of our group. To put ourselves in a position for a top-four seed is special. We set ourselves up better in DC to win three games in three days.

"The game was a grind it out, gritty type of game. I told the guys that the team that got most consecutive stops was going to win the game. We did that. The guys executed and we won a great game."

The two teams were tied at 49-all after regulation and each club scored eight points in the first overtime period, setting up the decisive second OT period.

Farrar's fifth three-pointer of the night staked the Seahawks to a 69-65 advantage with 1:11 left in the second OT period, but Drexel responded to tie the score at 69-all when Butler's shot in the paint rolled in with 45 seconds left.

White then converted the front end of a bonus situation and after UNCW sophomore Jamarii Thomas swiped the ball away from Butler, White knocked down two free throws to give UNCW a 72-69 edge. Butler made both ends of a bonus situation with 4.2 seconds left, but the Seahawks had difficulty getting the ball in play, setting up House's last-ditch attempt.

The Seahawks missed their first four field goal attempts of the contest and trailed quickly, 7-1, following a putback by Butler inside. After a White layup, the Dragons used a 13-0 run over 4:45 and the lead ballooned to 15 points, 22-7, with 7:57 on the clock.

UNCW came alive when Phillips sank a pair of free throws to start an 8-0 run over the next 1:49, helping the Seahawks close out the first half in strong fashion. Trailing by 10 points, UNCW netted the final five points of the period, capped by an alley-oop lay-in by White with .5 seconds remaining and a free throw after a technical foul, closing the gap to 27-22 at the break.

Farrar, the transfer from Charleston, provided a spark early in the half when the junior guard drained back-to-back three-pointers before going to the bench with three personals.

The Seahawks complete a two-game swing to the Northeast by playing Delaware on Saturday, Feb. 18, in Newark, Del. The game will tip at 4 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center.
