Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Joe Browning

Nelson, Jr., Fuels Blue Hens In Road Finale

NEWARK, Del. – Dynamic guard Jameer Nelson, Jr., erupted for a career-high 39 points to ignite Delaware's Blue Hens past UNCW, 75-66, in the men's basketball road finale for the Seahawks early Saturday at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Seahawks sit at 21-8 overall and 11-5 in the Colonial Athletic Association following the loss to the defending CAA champions. UNCW shares third place in the loop with Towson. The Blue Hens stand 14-15 and 6-10.

Nelson, Jr., exploded for 22 points in the first half and added 17 more after intermission on 13-for-21 shooting, 5-for-8 behind the arc and 6-for-10 at the free throw line. He also added three rebounds, two assists and three steals in the contest.

Sophomore guard Trazarien White pace the Seahawks with 20 points. Senior guard Maleeck Harden-Hayes and junior guard Donovan Newby chipped in 14 points apiece for the Seahawks, who shot 46.4 percent on the day.

"Give all the credit to Delaware," said Takayo Siddle, UNCW's third-year head coach. "He (Delaware head coach Martin Ingelsby) had his team ready to play and they came out and put it on us. Jameer Nelson was pretty special today.

"Jameer hit some tough shots. We let him get going early and let him be too comfortable early. With a good player like that, if you let him get into a rhythm, he'll make you pay. That's exactly what he did today.

"You have to put two halves together. We didn't play two halves. We coasted in the first half. We weren't ready to go and at Game 29, I shouldn't be saying that."

The Blue Hens shot 58.3 percent in the first half to bolt out to a 42-29 halftime lead and pushed the margin to as many as 20 points early in the final period before the Seahawks rallied.

Delaware scored the first seven points of the second half, capped by a Nelson bank shot, to build a 49-29 margin with 18:05 remaining in the contest.

The Seahawks, however chipped away and finally closed the gap to six points, 68-62, following a White tip-in with 3:04 left to play.

But Nelson, Jr., answered with a basket at 2:52 and added a pair of free throws with 40 seconds left to keep the visitors at bay. Nelson has reached double figures in 25 of Delaware's 29 games this season and broke the 30-point plateau for the fourth time in his career.

Nelson, Jr., had the hot hand in the first half and the Blue Hens knew it. The redshirt junior guard went 7-for-9 from the field, including 4-for-5 in long distance attempts, en route to 22 points. Nine different players scored for the Blue Hens in the opening frame.

Reserve guard Jahmari Harvey's jumper on the left elbow with 9:38 left in the first period helped the Seahawks climb within 19-17, but the Blue Hens used an 8-0 spurt to break away and Nelson, Jr.'s three-ball from the top of the key pushed the score to double digits, 27-17, with 7:22 on the clock. UD made eight consecutive baskets at one point midway through the period.

Another 10-2 run gave the Blue Hens, who shot 58.3 percent in the first half, more breathing room. Nelson, Jr., connected on his fourth three-pointer of the half and added both ends of a bonus situation at the charity stripe to extend the margin to 37-24 at the three-minute mark.

UNCW had won six of its last seven outings before Saturday's setback at the Bob. The Blue Hens had dropped four of four entering the contest.

UNCW returns to North Carolina to wrap up the regular season with a pair of home games vs. Stony Brook (Feb. 23) and Towson (Feb. 25). Both contests will tip at 7 p.m.
