Tigers Break Away from Seahawks, 60-44

TOWSON, Maryland – Towson used 8-0 spurt to close the third quarter to break away from UNCW 60-44 in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball action at the SECU Arena on Sunday afternoon.

The Tigers improved to 14-9 overall with an 8-4 league mark. The Seahawks fell to 4-19 and stand 1-11 in CAA play.

Graduate guard Carrie Gross paced the Seahawks, who shot 37.7 percent (20-of-53) from the field, with 17 points and junior guard Evan Miller matched her career-high 13 points after setting the personal benchmark one game ago at Delaware.

Redshirt junior Kylie Kornegay-Lucas delivered 13 markers off the bench for Towson, who shot 39.7 percent (25-of-63) from the floor.

A tightly contested first half saw seven ties and five lead changes, with neither squad taking a larger than a five-point lead.

The Seahawks, ahead 16-14 after the opening quarter, maintained their advantage for much of the second period until two late free throws by Kornegay-Lucas flipped the score towards the Tigers, 27-26, at halftime.

The conference rivals traded the lead five times over the first 2:34 following intermission before Towson's Quinzia Fulmore converted a layup that kickstarted a 12-2 run to close the third and carry a 43-34 Tigers advantage into the final period.

A Miller three-pointer cut the Seahawk deficit back to single digits, 46-37, with 9:29 left to play but Towson countered with four straight points to push the lead beyond 10 points for good.

UNCW returns to Trask Coliseum next Friday for a rematch vs. Hampton at 7 p.m. The Pirates bested the Seahawks 38-34 when the teams last met on Jan. 15.
