Pirates Hand Seahawks Saturday Setback

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – East Carolina scored eight runs in the first two innings to claim a 9-1 decision in five innings over the UNCW softball team at Boseman Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Pirates closed the weekend with a 3-2 record while the Seahawks dipped to 2-3 to start 2023.

East Carolina's Jordan Hatch (2-1) limited the Seahawks to one run on three hits in five innings of work.

UNCW junior right-hander Carrigan Ewers (0-1) allowed three earned runs on six hits and a walk across 1.1 innings in her first start of the season. Senior Amberlyn Pearce tossed 3.2 relief innings, giving up one run.

The Seahawks committed four errors in the first two innings that led to four unearned runs for the Pirates.

Graduate student Janel Gamache launched her first home run of the season over the right field wall to put UNCW on the board with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. The two-way star's 25th career home run extended her hit streak to four games.

The Seahawks hit the road for the first time next weekend when they play two doubleheaders against UNC Greensboro and Morehead State on Saturday and Sunday in part of the Spartan-hosted tournament at UNCG Softball Stadium.

GAME NOTES: UNCW and ECU have split the last four meetings in the all-time series … The rivals will meet again on Mar. 22 in the Port City … The Seahawks committed five errors … The Pirates are the first of nine in-state opponents the Seahawks will face this season … ECU scored five unearned runs … Jada Santiago made her first start of the season … Attendance was 134.
