Gamache, Seahawks Earn Friday Split

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW was on both ends of a pair of shutouts in a doubleheader split against Purdue Fort Wayne and No. 11 Virginia Tech in softball action on Friday morning at Boseman Field.

The Seahawks (2-2) handled the Mastodons (0-3) 7-0 in the early game before the Hokies (3-0) blanked UNCW 6-0 in the midday contest.

The Seahawks conclude their season-opening tournament on Saturday vs. East Carolina at 11:30 a.m. (NEW TIME)

GAME 1 | UNCW 7, Purdue Fort Wayne 0

Graduate two-way player Janel Gamache (1-0) carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and the UNCW offense recorded a season-high 11 hits, including home runs by Maddy Altiers and Mary Sobataka, to power past Purdue Fort Wayne 7-0 early Friday morning.

Altiers, Sobataka and fifth-year Jada Santiago each drove in two runs. Sophomore Mackenzie Amodeo also contributed an RBI in her first start of the season.

Gamache pitched her third career shutout, allowing two hits while striking out four batters. The Exeter, R.I., product was 1-for-2 with a double, walk and run scored in the batter's box.

The Mastodons' Kennedy Peckinpaugh (0-1) was charged four runs in 0.1 innings of work before being lifted for Gracie Brinkerhoff.

The Seahawks plated four runs on five hits and an error in the first inning highlighted by Altiers' first-career home run over the center field wall that also scored Morgan Britt. Junior Tayler Vitola crossed home for the game's first run on a Sobataka sac-bunt.

Another run was added when Amodeo reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded to plate Gamache, who walked two batters earlier.

Sobataka picked up her second RBI on a solo blast to left field on a 1-0 count in the bottom of the fourth and made it a 5-0 game.

Santiago, who pinch-hit for Britt in the bottom of the sixth, ripped a single up the middle that scored Vitola and Susie Borda to cap the offensive day.

GAME 2 | #11 Virginia Tech 6, UNCW 0

Virginia Tech batted around in a four-run sixth inning to claim a 6-0 shutout victory over UNCW.

The Hokies scored a run in the fourth and fifth innings before breaking the game open with five hits in the sixth frame.

Virginia Tech sophomore Emma Lemley (2-0) limited the Seahawks to one hit and struck out nine in her second straight shutout.

Sophomore right-hander Kara Hammock (1-1) gave up five runs and seven hits in 5.0+ innings. Senior Amberlyn Pearce allowed no earned runs and scattered three hits in two relief innings.

Junior Cameron Fagan and senior Jayme Bailey combined for five of the Hokies' six RBI, including a three-run home run by Bailey in the sixth.

Sophomore Bre Peck connected on her first round-tripper of the season in the fourth inning.

UNCW's Gamache upped her hit streak to three games with a fifth-inning single to center field.

GAME NOTES: UNCW is 2-0 against Purdue Fort Wayne … Vitola, Sobataka and Elizabeth Winstead each had two hits …Vitola snapped a three-game hit streak vs Virginia Tech … The Seahawks committed an error in each game … UNCW is 3-for-5 in stolen bases attempts this season … The Seahawks' 11 hits were the most in a game since last year's CAA Championship Game win over Elon (12) … UNCW had nine games with seven or more RBI last season.
