Mercer, Powell Lift Seahawks Over Spartans

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – A pair of second half goals by Gabe Mercer and Caleb Powell lifted the UNCW men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over UNC Greensboro on Tuesday night at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

The Seahawks moved to 6-3-3 overall with their third shutout in their last four games. The Spartans stumbled to 1-9-3.

UNCW held a 13-7 shot advantage, the seventh time the Seahawks have outshot an opponent in 2023. It also represents the eighth game UNCW has limited an opposing team to a single-digit shot total.

The teams played through 69 scoreless minutes until a Spartan penalty inside the box allowed Mercer to convert his second penalty kick goal and fifth overall of the season.

Powell tacked on an insurance goal 11 minutes later with his first career goal on assists from freshmen Brice Letan and Bryan Miralrio. Letan first attempted to score with a sliding strike from a cross by Miralrio, but UNCG goalkeeper William Garinger deflected it toward Powell, who struck in the score.

Goalkeeper Jacob Randolph recorded his second consecutive shutout and sixth overall with four saves.

UNCW next travels to Drexel to take on the Dragons on Saturday at 1 p.m.
