Gamble, Jackson Pace Seahawks in Loss at Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, New York – Stony Brook utilized a 22-5 first half run to turn back the UNCW women's basketball team 75-54 in the Seahawks' Colonial Athletic Association road opener on Friday night at Island Federal Arena.

The Seawolves, (9-5, 3-0 CAA), ran their win streak to five games. The Seahawks, (3-10, 0-2 CAA), dropped their third straight contest.

UNCW, who shot 38.6 percent (22-of-57) from the floor, were led by sophomore guard Jayde Gamble's 14 points, her seventh double-digit scoring effort of the year. Junior forward Lexi Jackson added 13 points, including 12 in the second half, along with a team-high eight rebounds.

Stony Brook guard Anastasia Warren scored 13 of her game-high 23 points before halftime. Junior guard Kelis Corley and sophomore forward Sherese Pittman each contributed 12 markers for the Seawolves, who connected at a 41.1 percent (23-of-56) rate.

The team's stayed within a score of one another through the game's first seven minutes. After UNCW's Asia Henderson converted a layup at the 3:08 mark, Stony Brook closed the opening period with 11 of the final 15 points to take a 21-13 lead into the second period.

The Seawolves remained on the attack with an 11-1 run to start the second quarter that swelled their lead to 32-14 with 7:11 to go before halftime and took a 36-20 lead into the break.

The Seahawks, trailing 42-22 at the 6:47 point in the third quarter, trimmed the deficit to 14 with an 8-1 spurt before Stony Brook netted six unanswered points to push the lead back to 49-29 with 4:24 remaining before the final period.

The Seahawks head north on Sunday for a 1 p.m. game at Northeastern at the Cabot Center.
