Women's Basketball Falls at William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia – William & Mary built a double-digit lead at the end of the first quarter to turn back UNCW 62-48 in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball action on Friday night at Kaplan Arena.

The Tribe improved to 10-9 overall and are 5-3 in the CAA with their fourth straight victory. The Seahawks dropped to 4-15 in 2022-23 with a 1-7 league mark.

Sophomore guard Jayde Gamble contributed a game-high 16 points and was joined in double figures by graduate guard Carrie Gross' 12-point effort. Gamble has reached double figures in four of her last five games.

William & Mary were paced by graduate guard Sydney Wagner's 13 points. Junior forward Rebekah Frisby-Smith paired 10 points with a game-high five assists.

The Tribe scored the game's first five points before Gamble nailed back-to-back baskets to cut the deficit to one, 5-4, with 4:39 to go in the first quarter. William & Mary then closed the first frame on a 9-0 run to take a 14-4 lead into the second period.

An 11-3 second-quarter run by UNCW made it a four-point game, 19-15, at the 4:48 mark. The Tribe responded again with 11 of the final 13 points before halftime to take a 30-17 lead into the break.

UNCW is idle until Friday, Feb. 3, when it travels to Charleston for a 6 p.m. game.
