Gross Sets Career-High in Monmouth Loss

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Monmouth guard Ariana Vanderhoop scored five points in the final 30 seconds to hand UNCW a narrow 55-52 setback in Sunday afternoon Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball action at Trask Coliseum.

The Hawks (9-10, 4-4 CAA) snapped a three-game losing skid. The Seahawks (4-14, 1-6 CAA) split a pair of home games this weekend.

Graduate guard Carrie Gross established a new career-high with 25 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter. Sophomore guard Jayde Gamble contributed 12 points, her third double-digit scoring effort in her last four games.

Vanderhoop led the Monmouth charge with a team-high 24 points, on 9-of-14 shooting, along with eight rebounds. Joining the 5-9 sophomore in double figures was junior center Belle Kranbuhl with 10 markers.

Gross and Vanderhoop combined for 29 points in a high-scoring fourth quarter that included one tie and three lead changes. The Hawks extended the lead to a quarter-high five points, 49-44, before Gross and Gamble hit a pair of layups to make it a one-point game with 47 seconds remaining.

Vanderhoop responded with a three-pointer to push Monmouth's advantage back to 52-48 with 28 ticks on the clock. The Boston, Mass., native then sank a pair of free throws 17 seconds later to ice the game.

UNCW rallied from an early 20-11 deficit by holding the Hawks to 1-of-14 shooting in the second quarter. A 13-3 frame carried the Seahawks to a 26-23 halftime advantage.

A tightly contested third period made it a 34-30 game entering the fourth quarter. The Hawks took their first lead of the second half with the fourth's first six points before Gross flipped the score back in UNCW's favor, 37-36, with an old-fashioned three-point play at the 6:58 mark.

Gross then scored the Seahawks' next 12 points to keep UNCW within one possession entering the final minutes.

The Seahawks will now play a road game in four of their next five contests. The stretch begins with a trip to William & Mary for a 7 p.m. contest at Kaplan Arena on Friday.
