Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Joe Browning

Harden-Hayes Explodes In Road Victory

STONY BROOK, New York – Senior guard Maleeck Harden-Hayes pumped in 25 of his career-high 31 points in the second half to power UNCW past Stony Brook, 62-51, in the first matchup between the two Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball teams early Saturday at Federal Island Arena.

The Seahawks increased their record to 16-6 overall and 6-3 in the CAA with their second win in the last three games. The Seawolves dropped to 7-13 and 3-4 after losing their third in a row.

The slick-shooting Harden-Hayes went 8-for-11 from the floor, 5-for-7 from long distance and converted all 10 of his free throw attempts to lead all scorers and added seven rebounds. He became the first player to reach the 30-point plateau since Mike Okauru bucketed 30 points in a 92-70 victory at William & Mary on Feb. 2, 2022.

Senior guard Shykeim Phillips added 10 points and eight rebounds for the Seahawks, who outscored the Seawolves by 10 points in the final period.

Freshman guard Toby Onyekonwu paced Stony Brook with 11 points. Graduate forward Frankie Policelli and senior guard Tyler Stephenson-Moore chipped in 10 points apiece for the Seawolves.

"What I saw today is a team that was hungry and a team that was disrespected," said Takayo Siddle, UNCW's third-year head coach. "We were hungry for a win.

"Maleeck enjoys playing basketball and has a passion for it. He prepares the right way and when you do that, you give yourself a chance. He put us on his back tonight."

The Seahawks just ahead at halftime, 22-21, before falling behind quickly in the second half when Policelli scored on a jumper just 40 seconds into the final period

That's when Harden-Hayes went to work.

The Moorhead, Minn., product caught fire, burying four consecutive three-pointers in a 1:57 span to put the Seahawks on top, 34-23, at the 16:56 mark.

Stony Brook battled back, however, and, trailing 36-28, reeled off eight straight points, including six points in 60 seconds to pull even. A splash in the left corner by the speedy Onyekonwu with 12:41 remaining made it a new ball game.

But the Seahawks responded with a 13-4 rally to get the margin back to 49-40 after a nifty basket inside by Phillips at 5:41.

The Seawolves rallied once again to close the gap to 56-51 with 1:17 left to play, setting up a wild sequence under the Seahawk basket. UNCW's Trazarien White knifed through the paint and missed a short field goal attempt, but Harden-Hayes soared in traffic for a stick back dunk, giving UNCW a seven-point advantage with 48 seconds on the clock. UNCW scored the final six points of the contest to nail down another road win.

The two teams traded buckets early and, with defense dominating the action, no more than two points separated the clubs in the first 20 minutes.

With the game knotted at 19-all, a three-pointer by Harden-Hayes at 2:44 wound up being the lone field goal by either team in the final 7:53 of the half. Stony Brook's last field goal of the first period came with 8:12 left when Onyekonwu drained a three-ball.

The Seahawks return to North Carolina for a two-game homestand, beginning on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2023, vs. Monmouth. Tip-off is 7 p.m. at Trask Coliseum.
