Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Joe Browning

Seahawks Win 17th of Season In Thriller

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Senior guard Maleeck Harden-Hayes' putback and free throw with just over two minutes remaining sparked UNCW past stubborn Monmouth, 52-49, in a low-scoring Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball game Thursday night at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks won for the third time in their last four starts and raised their record to 17-6 overall and 7-3 in the CAA. The Hawks fell to 1-20 and at 0-8, and remained winless in their first season with the CAA.

UNCW, which topped Monmouth in the league opener back on Dec. 28, 68-55, completed their second series sweep in CAA play this season after beating Elon twice in January. The Seahawks sit in fourth place in the league standings behind Charleston (9-0), Towson (7-2) and Hofstra (7-2).

"I'm proud of our guys for adjusting on the fly," said Takayo Siddle, UNCW's third-year head coach. "Our guys did an unbelievable job of staying connected. We came up with some big plays at the right time to close the game out. We fought and they did, too. It just came down to one possession. That's what conference play is."

Sophomore guard Trazarien White of UNCW led all scorers with 16 points, including 12 in the second period. Harden-Hayes was the only other Seahawk in double figures with 14 points, along with seven rebounds.

Playing their final game in January, the Seahawks jumped out to a 29-22 halftime lead and held off the pesky Hawks down the stretch to improve to 8-2 at Trask Coliseum this season.

Leading by one point, 48-47, and under three minutes on the clock, the Seahawks gained some badly-needed breathing room when Harden-Hayes gathered in a missed field goal attempt by White and converted a bucket with 2:33 on the clock. The Moorhead, Minn., product was fouled on the play and made the ensuing free throw to get the margin back to 51-47.

Monmouth's Klemen Vuga scored on a layup and after a free throw by White, the Hawks missed on an opportunity to send the game into extra time. A long three-point try by Jack Collins in front of the Hawk bench caromed off the rim as time expired, leaving King Rice's club still searching for their first win in conference play.

The Seahawks were out front, 40-29, following a three-pointer by White with 12:34 left in the second half before the Hawks rallied with a 16-6 spurt midway through the second period. Monmouth scored 11 out of the next 13 points and narrowed the deficit to 42-40 on a putback by Collins. Monmouth used a 16-6 run to close the gap to 46-45, but the slippery Newby found the middle of the lane open and converted an easy layup to keep the Hawks at bay.

UNCW wound up shooting 39.1 percent from the floor on the night, but connected on 12-for-15 from the charity stripe. Monmouth made 35.6 percent and went 15-for-23 at the foul line.

In the first half, White's acrobatic bucket inside staked the Seahawks to a 13-4 advantage with 12:29 left in the half until the visiting Hawks got untracked. Monmouth misfired on its first seven field goal attempts before Jarvis Vaughn's layup with 11:33 on the clock got the Hawks on the board.

UNCW built its largest lead of the opening period, 15-6, on a pair of free throws by Newby at 11:08, but the Hawks wouldn't go away. Monmouth reeled off 12 unanswered points over the next 3:54 and took an 18-15 advantage on a pair of free throws by Tahron Allen at the seven-minute mark.

The Seahawks regrouped over the last three minutes of the first half, outscoring the Hawks, 11-2, for a seven-point margin at the break.

UNCW wraps up a two-game homestand on Thursday with a 7 p.m. tip against North Carolina A&T, a 68-55 upset winner over Drexel on Thursday. It will be the first appearance for the Aggies as a CAA member in Wilmington.
