Seahawks Earn 62-58 Victory vs. Phoenix

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Sophomore guard Jayde Gamble matched her career-high with 20 points as UNCW held off a late Elon comeback to earn a 62-58 win in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball action on Friday night at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks improved to 4-13 overall and now stand 1-5 in CAA play. The Phoenix dipped to 4-14 this season, including an 0-7 league mark.

Gamble delivered 12 points in the first half to help UNCW to a 34-32 halftime advantage. Junior forward Lexi Jackson chipped in 11 points along with game-highs of nine rebounds and four blocks in the well-balanced effort.

Elon guard Lenaejha Evans contributed 16 points, three off her season high, while redshirt freshman guard Kamryn Doty added 10 points off the bench for the Phoenix.

The Seahawks led as many as 10 points, 44-34, midway through the third period and pushed the advantage to double-digits four times in the third frame.

Elon, however, scored nine of the fourth quarter's first 12 points to make it a one-possession game, 53-51, after Phoenix freshman Raven Preston converted a pair of free throws with 2:24 left.

After Gamble pushed the lead back to four with two makes from the charity stripe, Elon's Bria Harmon dwindled the lead down to 55-53 with 46 seconds left. The Seahawks then connected on seven free throws the rest of the way to secure their first CAA win this season.

The Seahawks return to action at home on Sunday vs. new CAA member Monmouth at 2 p.m.
