Pride Rolls To 70-46 Victory Over Seahawks

HEMPSTEAD, New York – Redshirt senior guards Tyler Thomas and Aaron Estrada combined for 45 points to ignite Hofstra past visiting UNCW, 70-46,  in a battle for second place in the Colonial Athletic Association on Thursday night at the Mack Sports Complex.

The Pride won for the sixth time in seven tries on its home floor and improved to 13-8 overall and 6-2 in the CAA. The Seahawks stand 15-6 and 5-3 after dropping the first leg of a two-game swing to Hofstra and Stony Brook.

UNCW dropped into fifth place in the 13-team league behind Charleston (8-0), Hofstra (6-2), Towson (5-2) and Drexel (5-2).

Thomas poured in 28 points – 19 in the second half - and Estrada added 17 points for the Pride, which shot 52.7 percent on the night, including 59.3 percent in the second half. Hofstra outscored UNCW, 40-16, in the final period.

Senior guard Maleeck Harden-Hayes was the lone Seahawk in double figures with 13 points. UNCW shot 40 percent overall and just 31.6 percent in the final 20 minutes.

"We just came out and decided we didn't want to play any defense," said Takayo Siddle, UNCW's third-year head coach. "Those guards went to work on us and got anything they wanted. We've got to be better.

"We just have to figure this thing out. We just didn't compete. It was one of the worst team defensive games that we've had."

After opening the game 2-for-11 from the floor with six turnovers, the Seahawks came alive to pull even with the Pride at the break before the explosive Estrada, the reigning CAA Player of the Year, sparked Hofstra after intermission. With the 6-3, 195-pound guard pulling the strings, Hofstra scored 11 of the first 13 points of the second half to break away.

The game was knotted at 32-all when Estrada canned four consecutive baskets and sophomore guard Darlingstone Dubar's free throw with 16:24 remaining gave Hofstra a 41-32 advantage.

Meanwhile, senior forward Amari Kelly, UNCW's threat in the middle, was mired in foul trouble and was disqualified with 8:53 left to play. He finished with six rebounds and three rebounds one game after recording his first career double-double.

A Shykeim Phillips bucket in the paint closed the gap to 41-36 at 15:01, but the Pride went on a 13-2 tear to raise the margin to 16 points. Hofstra outscored UNCW over the final 15 minutes, 29-10, to win its fifth straight in Hempstead against the Seahawks.

Thomas had the hot hand early for the Pride, scoring nine of the team's first 13 points as Hofstra bolted out to a 13-4 lead. A driving layup by Thomas with 12:44 left in the first half staked the Pride to an early seven-point cushion.

Hofstra maintained the margin over the next five minutes until the Seahawks rallied to knot the score at intermission. Trailing 24-17 with just under five minutes left, UNCW outscored the Pride, 13-6, over the final 3:29 to pull even at the half.

Harden-Hayes ignited the rally with a conventional three-point play and his second triple of the contest brought the Seahawks within two points with one minute left in the first period. Reserve forward Victor Enoh's basket inside with 23 seconds left then tied the score at halftime.

The Seahawks complete their two-game swing to Long Island with a 1 p.m. tip-off on Saturday against CAA newcomer Stony Brook at the Island Federal Arena. Hofstra travels to North Carolina on Thursday to take on Elon at the Schar Center in Elon, N.C.
